Father and Summer
So, it’s the first day of summer but I was reminded of one other aspect of today. It’s Father’s Day. I spent the night with a family in Bracebridge. They have a gorgeous shrine in their front room. At 7 a.m., we all came together for chanting, puja, and a discussion on the Bhagavad-gita, 14.4, referencing Krishna on the topic of fatherhood, where He claims, as God, to be the ultimate Dad.
We drove south to Toronto and on very short notice I was requested to give a class for our Vancouver Centre.
“Please give me a little warning next time?” I suggested. I was on in two hours.
Okay, so I gathered some famous quotes on the topic of being a responsible father. Mike Myers, the Canadian comedic person said this:
“Anyone who tells you fatherhood is the greatest thing that can happen to you, they are understating it.”
From U.S. President Harry Truman:
“Any fool can have a child. That doesn’t make you a father. It’s the courage to raise a child that makes you a father.”
Additional quotes, and from what I gather, are anonymous:
“One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters.”
“Fathers are great caretakers; they make their own little ones feel safe and secure. They teach their little ones to ride bikes, to jump higher, and to always aim for the best.”
But here is Shakespeare:
“When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry.”
Good stuff.
At the end of my day, I met Johram, who just started reading Prabhupada’s books. He’s a proud dad of three.
