Gage Park, Hamilton

Quiet in the Park

It was time to get out of the city for a change and so Chris and Nick orchestrated a kirtan gathering (first for this year) at a park in Hamilton. Hamilton is a one-hour drive from Toronto, has a population of half a million and in the early 70s had quite a following of Krishna devotees; many of which have held onto their passion for Krishna.

Chris, who is a Hamiltonian, directed us to the stage or bandstand where, in the summer, a popular “festival of friends” takes place. But today, despite being Sunday, the park was quiet, which is owed to the fact that rain kept threatening the entire day and the long weekend factor also contributed to this reality.

Nevertheless, the group of us, thirteen in number, put out our best in the form of sound by voice, drum, harmonium and shakers. At least the squirrels could hear us as well as one falcon who sped by in the air, perhaps after something. He was set for food and he eventually did catch a substantially sized rodent. We couldn’t make out what it was. It was fairly torn apart.

Our meal was taken under the bandstand awning. Wraps in whatever we assembled; the kind I eat on the road during marathon walks. Composed of olives, avocados, peppers and tortillas. Hummus was accidentally forgotten. They were good. They were offered to Krishna.

Our time was well spent in joy and we vowed to come to Hamilton in the future.

May the Source be with you!
